Q11: Do joint owners always have equal shares?
A11:
Usually they do. Whether they are Joint Tenants or Tenants in Common each owner will normally have an equal share in the property unless there is some evidence or agreement to the contrary. If all owners contribute the same amount, equal ownership is appropriate. However, if one party contributes more towards the price than another and if it is the intention that one party should have a greater share of the property than another, this should be specifically stated in a formal agreement called a Trust Deed. Please ask for further advice if you think you need a Trust Deed.
